The major pop group will take to London’s Wembley Arena in September for a comeback show to perform their hefty back catalogue of hits to fans who have been waiting for a reunion
A popular UK girlband has performed on stage for a TV performance, marking their first time on stage together in decades, reforming ahead of a comeback show at London’s Wembley Arena in the coming months.
Three-piece Mis-Teeq had a string of hits in the early noughties – seven top ten hits in a row in the UK, if we’re counting – as well as a string of hits in the US and Australia before they broke up in 2005.
The girl group’s resident rapper Alesha Dixon forged the most successful solo career in the wake of the split, releasing four studio albums and becoming a reality TV judge on Britain’s Got Talent.
That’s exactly where where the trio – made up of Dixon, Sabrina Washington and Su-Elise Nash – made their comeback performance with a medley of some of their biggest hits.
This week’s performance marked the first time the three members of the group had performed together since 2004, ahead of their September comeback show to perform their back catalogue of hits to a homegrown audience to mark the 25th anniversary of the release of their debut album Lickin’ on Both Sides .
Their biggest song Scandalous even managed to break into the American music scene, peaking at number 11 of the top 40 on the US Billboard charts, boosted by its feature on the Catwoman movie soundtrack.
Not long after Scandalous made waves across the pond, however, the band split. They had officially announced their split in early 2005 after their record label Telstar Records went bust.
The tanked record company entered bankruptcy proceedings shortly after taking on an expat from the world’s biggest girlband ever, the Spice Girls. Much of the blame for the record label’s failings were placed at the feet of Victoria Beckham, who had received a huge advance to sign with the label. She produced one single under Telstar Records before the label went under.
Early reactions to the reunion have been positive, with fans rushing to the comments section under clips on line of their Britain’s Got Talent performance to marvel at how little the trio appear to have changed since they launched their pop careers at the turn of the millennia.
One user said: “How do they all look even finer?” one fan asked. A second added: ““These 3 beautiful women are age 45-47! Wow, just wow, older women rock.” A third added: “They look exactly the same hardly aged!”
The reunion comes as a wave of early-2000s girl groups return to the spotlight after decades away, such as US smash hit group the Pussycat Dolls, who recently made their first televised appearance in more than six years at the American Music Awards.
Now performing as a trio, the group is set to embark on a UK and European tour later this year. However, their return to the limelight has had a few bumps in the road, with plans for a North American reunion tour scrapped entirely after weak ticket sales.
Meanwhile, Australian pop group Bardot — formed during the debut season of the Aussie reality TV series Popstars — have continued their own comeback with a performance at London’s Mighty Hoopla festival this weekend.
Earlier this year, the band reunited on stage at the inaugural Sydney edition of the festival, receiving an enthusiastic response from fans during their first public performance since disbanding in 2002.
Festival-goers in London were treated to an extended set from the group, who enjoyed a string of six consecutive top-20 hits in Australia between 2000 and 2002 before eventually splitting.
