A viral DIY hack claims to keep spiders away from your home using a simple natural spider repellent mixture
Homeowners searching for ways to stop spiders from creeping into their homes may well find the solution lurking in their kitchen cupboards or bathroom cabinets. A viral social media hack claims that one straightforward household concoction could keep the unwelcome critters at bay, without the need for costly or harsh repellents.
The tip comes from Instagram creator Ceith Griffith, who posted a video demonstrating how to whip up the DIY mixture using petroleum jelly and peppermint oil. In the clip, he says: “Mix Vaseline and peppermint oil together.” He then advises viewers to dab a small amount of the mixture onto a cotton bud before applying it to spots where spiders or insects are frequently seen. Ceith promises the solution will “get rid of them for good.”
Peppermint oil is widely championed online as a natural spider repellent, as the creatures are thought to be put off by powerful scents. Pest control firm Rentokil states that essential oils are commonly used to deter insects when applied around doors, windows and gaps where spiders might sneak into homes.
Research published by the National Library of Medicine has also investigated peppermint oil’s insect-repelling qualities, particularly against certain pests that are sensitive to potent aromatic compounds. Experts suggest that strong-smelling oils may help discourage spiders and insects from lingering in treated areas, though results can differ.
The Vaseline component of the mix is thought to help prolong the peppermint scent by holding the oil in position on surfaces instead of allowing it to evaporate rapidly. Some DIY cleaning and pest-control fans also suggest the sticky consistency can make treated entry points less appealing to crawling insects.
Spider activity tends to rise indoors during late summer and autumn as males seek out mates and warmer refuge. The British Pest Control Association notes spiders are typically harmless, but many people still seek methods to discourage them from entering living areas.
Budget-friendly versions of petroleum jelly and peppermint oil can frequently be found for around £5 combined from supermarkets, pharmacies and discount shops. Commercial spider repellents and plug-in deterrents can prove significantly pricier depending on brand and quantity.
Specialists warn against direct contact between concentrated essential oils and pets, especially cats, as certain oils may trigger irritation or health issues. The RSPCA advises keeping essential oils stored securely and using them carefully around animals.
