TikTok launches the UK’s first official #BookTok Bestseller List for the National Year of Reading 2026. Female authors dominate the inaugural top 20 as the app fuels a £86million publishing boom.
TikTok has officially formalised its massive influence on the British publishing industry by launching the UK’s first #BookTok Bestseller List.
Created in partnership with data specialists Media Control and NielsenIQ BookData, the new monthly chart combines verified physical retail sales with in-app engagement metrics to provide a definitive look at the titles truly resonating with young readers today.
The launch comes as part of a wider collaboration with the Department for Education and the National Literacy Trust for the National Year of Reading 2026. This government-backed initiative aims to reverse a decline in reading for pleasure, with TikTok now serving as a primary discovery tool for over half of all 16 to 25-year-olds in the UK.

Recent figures suggest the #BookTok community has become an economic powerhouse, driving more than 11 million book sales and generating approximately £86 million for the UK publishing industry in the last year alone.
The inaugural top 20, which will be updated on a monthly basis, is comprised entirely of female authors. Irish writer Chloe Walsh emerged as the standout name, with all six books in her Boys of Tommen series – which follows a group of teenagers navigating love, friendship, and trauma at a private school.
The rankings also highlight the dominance of “romantasy,” the platform’s most popular genre, with high-profile titles from Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros featuring prominently.
Beyond current trends, the chart reflects how #BookTok is fundamentally reshaping the lifecycle of books by breathing new life into older titles. A notable example is Donna Tartt’s The Secret History. Despite being first published in 1992, it has secured a spot on the list after finding a fresh audience decades later through viral digital recommendations.
By merging social media trends with actual till sales, the list identifies viral sensations that traditional charts may overlook. To bridge the gap between digital discovery and the high street, books featured on the monthly list will now be eligible for official #BookTok Bestseller stickers in physical bookstores.
Major publishers including Penguin Random House and HarperCollins have already embraced the system as a way to connect their authors with the app’s hyper-engaged audience.
Dominic Burns, Head of Operations at TikTok UK, noted that what began as a niche community conversation has evolved into a global movement that is bringing a new generation back into local bookshops. Burns comments: “Since TikTok’s inception, #BookTok has grown into a vibrant global community that has not only shaped the literary conversation but has fuelled bestsellers and brought a new generation ba ck into local bookshops.
“To celebrate this milestone year, we’re inviting everyone to join the World’s Biggest Book Club on TikTok, bringing readers together through unique online and in-person moments, to share the stories they love.”

David Hayman, Director of the National Year of Reading 2026, welcomed the partnership, stating that platforms like TikTok play a vital role in making reading feel relevant and accessible to young people through shared passion and creativity. Hayman said: “The National Year of Reading 2026 is about supporting people across the UK to rediscover the joy and power of reading in ways that feel relevant to them.
“Communities like #BookTok are playin g a vital role in this, inspiring a new generation of readers through creativity, connection and shared passion. We’re delighted to partner with TikTok to celebrate the World’s Biggest Book Club and encourage everyone to ‘Go All In’ on their passions and interests through reading.”
The bestseller list serves as the foundation for the “World’s Biggest Book Club,” a programme of events scheduled throughout 2026. This includes a return to the Hay Festival as an official digital media partner and the debut of #BookTok LIVE, a multi-sensory event designed to bring the online community together in person.
With three books currently selling every minute on TikTok Shop in the UK, the platform is now positioning itself as a central pillar of the nation’s literary culture.
