What you need to know as dozens of dog breeds could soon be banned:
Potential new legislation could see 67 popular dog breeds banned in the UK, including beloved pets like shih tzus, Welsh corgis, and dachshunds.
Currently, five breeds are already prohibited in Britain: Pit Bull Terriers, Japanese Tosas, Dogo Argentinos, Fila Brasileiros, and XL Bullies. Dogs are classified as banned based on their physical appearance rather than their breed name.
The proposed expansion targets breeds that suffer from selective breeding for aesthetic purposes. PETA has compiled the full list of 67 breeds that could face prohibition.
Owners of banned dogs face serious legal consequences, with authorities able to seize animals even without complaints or aggressive behaviour. Selling, abandoning, giving away, or breeding from prohibited dogs is also illegal.
If the legislation passes, licensed breeders would no longer be permitted to sell these breeds. However, existing dogs would remain legal and available for adoption through shelters.
PETA confirmed that current pet owners wouldn’t be forced to give up their dogs under the new rules.
