It has been more than two years since HMV last operated a shop in the city, after its High Chelmer store closed in 2024
A cherished high street music and entertainment retailer is preparing to return to Chelmsford city centre later this year. HMV is planning to launch a fresh store at the Meadows Shopping Centre.
The brand previously ran a shop at the High Chelmer Shopping Centre, which closed in 2024 after more than two decades of business. The location had hosted major figures from the music and entertainment world for album signings and various occasions.
While an exact launch date hasn’t been confirmed, HMV has indicated the store will open “later this year”.
The chain has already begun hiring for the outlet, with supervisor and sales assistant roles now listed online.
HMV will join the ranks of Burger King, Costa, Suit Direct and other brands at the Meadows Shopping Centre, reports the Express.
The arrival also comes after news that burger and fried chicken eatery Smoke and Pepper is scheduled to open in April, while Hollywood Bowl will take up a unit before the year concludes.
A HMV spokesperson said: “HMV is excited to open a new shop in Chelmsford later this year. While we are unable to share any details at the moment, we will share further information nearer the time.”
The chain entered administration on two occasions: first in January 2013 and subsequently in December 2018.
Nevertheless, in early 2019, HMV was acquired by Sunrise Records, a Canadian music retailer owned by Doug Putman, and approximately 100 stores and the majority of jobs were preserved. Since that time, the retailer has grown well beyond DVDs and CDs, turning its attention to vinyl records, pop culture merchandise, tech accessories, and even hosting live in-store performances.
