The Duke of Sussex admitted that he had received a very blunt reply from his brother when he tried to discuss his concerns for Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis
Prince Harry made an unprompted comment about Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis in the midst of his fall-out with the royal family – and it would have greatly angered his brother Prince William, according to a top royal expert.
Harry has made much of his role as the ‘spare’ to his sibling; he even named his tell-all memoir as such. He has spoken about the negative impact his position has had on his mental health – and even voiced fears for Charlotte and Louis who are, according to Harry, both ‘spares’ to their elder brother Prince George.
He made his comment during an interview with The Telegraph to promote his book, saying: “Though William and I have talked about it once or twice, and he has made it very clear to me that his kids are not my responsibility, I still feel a responsibility knowing that out of those three children, at least one will end up like me, the spare and that hurts, that worries me.”

William has never spoken about Harry and their fallout – but one expert warns he would have been less than impressed by the comments regarding his own children. Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond told OK! Magazine: “Harry has a huge chip on his shoulder about being a spare, we all know that now, but he doesn’t have to assume that William and Catherine’s children will feel the same as him.
“Look at the look at the Duke of Edinburgh and particularly look at the Princess Royal, they didn’t feel like the spares. They’ve gone out there and made it clear they don’t feel second-class in the least and worked hard regardless.
“Charlotte and Louis will be very important people with huge privilege and a huge platform, and so they don’t need to feel spare,” Jennie reasoned. “Just because Harry felt spare, doesn’t mean that his nephews and nieces will feel spare.”
While it’s true that George will be the one to inherit the throne in the future, he is said to be treated no differently to his siblings by the Prince and Princess. They try to maintain as normal a home life for their children as possible, with a souce previously telling the Daily Mail of William and Kate’s family life: “I think it would surprise people to see how ordinary things are at home.
“The children help with laying the table, clearing their plates when they’ve finished eating and helping with tidying up. There’s no preferential treatment.”
For William, it’s all the more important for the trio to experience a degree of normalcy. He was raised in the knowledge that he will one day be King – just as his eldest son George will be. But before royal duties begin, William wants to ensure George and his siblings enjoy a typical upbringing, with the right emotional support around them.
“As far as we are concerned within our family unit, we are a normal family,” he said in 2016. “I love my children in the same way any father does and I hope George loves me the same way any son does his father. We are very normal in that sense.”
George, Charlotte, and Louis share a notably close, and supportive sibling bond – and it’s likely the younger two will be there to support their big brother, both in future royal roles and behind closed doors.
