Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has mobilized a significant humanitarian operation, sending 40 tons of essential medical aid to Gaza, according to press agency Reuters. This initiative underscores the Kingdom of Morocco’s enduring commitment to the Palestinian cause, particularly during times of heightened conflict and dire humanitarian need.

Despite the formidable challenges in delivering aid to the Gaza Strip, this is not the first large-scale humanitarian mission organized by Morocco. The Cherifian sovereign’s consistent efforts reflect a deep-seated dedication to alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people.

From Food Aid to Medical Support

Earlier this year, on the first day of Ramadan, King Mohammed VI ordered the shipment of 40 tons of foodstuffs to Gaza. This initiative required exceptional logistical arrangements to ensure that the aid reached its destination, was received by the Palestinian Red Crescent, and was distributed effectively among the Gazan population. The current medical aid operation follows a similar logistical framework, aiming to deliver the supplies by land, ensuring quick and efficient distribution.

This latest consignment includes critical medical supplies, such as devices for treating burns, equipment for surgical and trauma emergencies, and a range of essential medicines. With Gaza’s healthcare system teetering on the brink of collapse—only 12 of its 36 hospitals are partially functional—the timely arrival of this aid is crucial. The stated objective of Moroccan diplomacy is to “meet the critical needs of the wounded and sick.”

A Lifeline Amidst Destruction

The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire, with infrastructure largely destroyed, severe shortages of essential supplies, and medical staff stretched to their limits. The aid provided by Morocco aims to ease the suffering of both adults and children injured in the conflict. King Mohammed VI’s personal commitment to the Palestinian cause is evident, with a significant portion of the aid financed directly by the sovereign.

Morocco’s pioneering efforts to deliver humanitarian aid directly to Gaza have set a precedent. The Kingdom was the first country to utilize an unprecedented overland route to ensure that aid reached the people of Gaza swiftly and efficiently. Furthermore, Morocco has been active on multiple fronts, supporting international initiatives for a ceasefire and continued humanitarian assistance.

Gaza at the Heart of Moroccan Foreign Policy

The Palestinian cause remains a cornerstone of Moroccan foreign policy. King Mohammed VI, in his capacity as Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, plays a pivotal role in advocating for Palestinian rights. Morocco’s strategic interests, while complex, have never overshadowed its unwavering support for Palestine.

Morocco has endorsed the United States’ three-stage peace plan aimed at establishing a lasting ceasefire in Gaza. This plan seeks to facilitate humanitarian aid access, protect civilians, enable the return of displaced persons, and rebuild devastated areas. Rabat has expressed hope that “the various parties concerned will adhere to this initiative and commit themselves to implementing its various phases,” as stated by the Cherifian diplomatic service.

For Morocco, the path to lasting peace in the Middle East is intrinsically linked to a two-state solution. This vision includes a Palestinian state defined by the June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, coexisting peacefully alongside an Israeli state.

Morocco’s Enduring Support for Palestine

Morocco’s longstanding support for the Palestinian people is well-documented. Historically, the Kingdom has consistently advocated for Palestinian rights on the international stage and has been a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause within various global forums.

King Mohammed VI’s leadership has been instrumental in fostering this support. His role as Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, established by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, underscores Morocco’s commitment to defending Palestinian rights, particularly in Jerusalem. The Committee focuses on preserving the Arab-Islamic identity of Jerusalem and safeguarding its religious and cultural heritage.

Public Mobilization and Solidarity

Since October 2023, public mobilization in Morocco has surged in support of Gaza. Massive rallies, attended by several hundred thousand people, have taken place in major cities such as Tangiers, Rabat, and Casablanca. These demonstrations reflect the deep-rooted solidarity and empathy of the Moroccan people towards their Palestinian brethren.

In conclusion, Morocco’s humanitarian efforts, led by King Mohammed VI, exemplify a profound and enduring commitment to the Palestinian cause. Through continuous support and diplomatic advocacy, the Kingdom of Morocco remains a steadfast ally to the people of Gaza, striving to bring relief and hope amidst the ongoing crisis.
