The Met Office says that, while the start of the November has been mild, temperatures are expected to plunge in the coming days — and snow is likely as a result
The Met Office forecasts snow this week as temperatures are anticipated to plunge.
The mercury peaked at 14.8C on Monday in Cardiff amid a balmy start to November. However, temperatures will now drop steadily and by Saturday, lows of just 3C are expected.
It is because a band of low pressure moves northeastwards today, bringing with it plenty of rain for most regions, notably Wales and the Northwest of England. As the mercury continues to plunge though, a dusting of snow is more likely as soon as Thursday across higher ground, including the Cairngorms in Scotland, parts of Aberdeenshire and potentially across Eryri (Snowdonia) in north Wales later in the week.
The Met Office’s long-range forecast reads: “Many central and northern parts of the UK will likely be in a colder but drier regime than of late with overnight frosts, and a few showers near windward coasts in particular which may be wintry on high ground. However, it could remain cloudier, milder and wetter initially across some southern and southwestern areas, with some uncertainty as to how quickly this clears away to the south.
“It is most likely that the bulk of the UK will experience drier and colder conditions into the first part of next week. Later in the period there is increasing uncertainty, but a trend towards more changeable conditions is possible, with some rain or showers in places, and perhaps some hill snow at times in the north. Temperatures overall may return to near-average.”

The weather agency also refers to snow later in the month as well. Netweather, an independent weather forecasting company, also understand snow is possible this week. Jo Farrow, a meteorologist with the group, noted temperatures will drop — but only to levels expected at this time of year. Nevetheless, the 10C forecast for Cardiff on Saturday is more than 4C colder than what the city experienced on Monday.
“Something colder with a frost risk in the north and even snow showers for Scottish hills but really it will just pull temperatures to where they should be at this time in November. Southern Britain could hold onto the milder air even into the weekend,” Ms Farrow wrote.
“There will also be a lot of rain for parts of the UK, mostly for western areas as low pressures rattle in from the Atlantic. A large meander southwards in the jetstream will continue to feed low pressures past western Europe to the UK.”
Nearly 40 areas are subject to weather warnings for rain as flooding is feared, including across south Wales today. More than 30mm of rain battered Hull on Monday, while Cranwell, Lincolnshire, saw a 25.4mm deluge in just a few hours.
