A man was stabbed minutes from Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium as crowds gathered to celebrate the club winning the Premier League title for the first time in 22 years
A man was taken to hospital after being stabbed near Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium on the night of the club’s Premier League title parade, police have said.
The incident unfolded shortly after 8.30pm on Hornsey Road, around a 15-minute walk from the north London stadium. An air ambulance was scrambled to the scene before the man, aged in his 20s, was taken to hospital with “knife injuries”.
The Met Police said in a statement: “Police were called at 20:38hrs on Hornsey Road, N7, to reports that a man had been stabbed.
“Officers attended with the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance and a man in his 20s was taken to hospital with knife injuries. He remains in a stable condition in hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
“No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting CAD 7925/31MAY or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
The stabbing came as thousands of Arsenal supporters gathered across north London to celebrate the club winning the Premier League title for the first time in 22 years.
The Met Police said 16 arrests were made during the event, with offences including drunken and disorderly behaviour, drug offences, sexual assault and assaults on emergency workers.
Footage shared on social media appeared to show a group of fans climbing onto the roof of a police van, with some drinking, chanting and banging on the vehicle while footballs were thrown nearby.
Arsenal’s title parade took place less than 24 hours after the Gunners were beaten in the Champions League final, with up to one million people thought to have attended.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said they had rescued “approximately 75 people” from incidents at height and urged fans to refrain from climbing onto rooftops during the celebrations. Crews also attended a fire at a hotel, believed to have been caused by a stray flare.
Assistant Commissioner of LFB, Pat Goulbourne, said: “Fortunately, the fire caused only a small amount of damage to the exterior of the building. Pyrotechnics are also believed to have triggered the fire alarms at several other locations in the area.”
The club had earlier issued a warning to those attending the parade, asking fans to respect local buildings and homes. “This is an historic occasion for supporters of all ages to share,” they wrote. “Please be mindful of younger supporters and families along the route, and considerate of local residents and businesses as you arrive and leave.
“Please follow the instructions of stewards, event staff and police, who will be across the entire route and can support you with any questions.
“We’d ask all those visiting to respect local buildings and homes and not attempt to climb or attach anything to scaffolding, trees, lampposts, statues, railings or other street furniture. Supporters are also reminded that flares, fireworks and pyrotechnics are strictly prohibited and may result in police action.”
