There has been a surge in interest in the wellness trend
Lidl is bringing a Bestway Ice Bath to the middle aisle for £29.99, which it says saves shoppers up to £370 on branded alternatives. Shoppers looking to take the plunge can get theirs in store nationwide from Sunday, May 24, while stocks last.
With puncture-resistant side walls and a galvanised steel frame, the 232 litre bath comes complete with a carry bag, cover and repair patch.
Cold water plunging (also known as cold water immersion or ice bathing) is submerging your body into cold water — typically between 7°C to 14°C — for a brief period, usually between 1one to five minutes.
It has evolved from an old-school athletic recovery tactic into a massive wellness trend. Cold water causes your blood vessels to constrict (narrow). When you get out, they dilate (open back up). This natural pumping action is said to help flush out metabolic waste and reduce inflammation, swelling, and muscle soreness.
The sudden cold ‘turns on the body’s fight-or-flight response’, triggering a release of adrenaline and dopamine. Studies show that cold immersion can spike dopamine levels by up to 250%, and the elevated mood and alertness can last for hours.
Some studies suggest that regular cold exposure can increase your white blood cell count over time, potentially making your body more resilient to common illnesses.
