Leeds hosted Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday and played out a 1-1 draw, but tragedy struck ahead of kick-off when a supporter sadly passed away at Elland Road
Leeds have confirmed that a supporter tragically died at Elland Road on Sunday ahead of their game against Manchester United. The two teams met for a Premier League match which ended in a 1-1 draw.
In a statement released three hours after full-time, the Yorkshire club said: “Leeds United are devastated to confirm that a supporter sadly passed away ahead of our Premier League fixture with Manchester United at Elland Road, following a medical emergency in the ground before kick-off.
“The thoughts of everyone at Leeds United are with the family and friends of the supporter at this exceptionally difficult time.”
No further details about the person who died or the circumstances of their passing have been released.
Leeds took the lead shortly after the hour mark, as Brenden Aaronson opened the scoring. Matheus Cunha replied for the visitors three minutes later and nothing could separate the sides before the final whistle.
The result moved Leeds six points clear of the relegation zone and continued their good run of form. Man United, meanwhile, remained fifth in the table.
