The winning packet is more than £1 cheaper than the branded biscuits
Digestives are a staple in biscuit tins up and down the country. They are a classic biscuit, with a perfect crunch and salty yet sweet flavour.
There are plenty of digestive biscuits on the market, with the branded McVitie’s being a standout for many. However, major UK supermarkets have their own options.
I decided to test a range of them to see if any could beat the big brand. Some were far too hard, while others tasted more like Rich Tea biscuits.
However, one supermarket did stand out above the rest and rivalled McVitie’s.
Lidl – 59p
At the bottom of my ranking is Lidl’s own digestive biscuits. They had an unusual flavour, reminding me more of a Rich Tea than the classic digestive. Beyond tasting like another biscuit, it lacked any other flavour. After one bite, I’d had enough.
2/10
M&S – 90p
Next came M&S as their digestives were too hard for my liking. They were hard to break apart with my hands, let alone my teeth. I think the texture made the biscuits far chewier than necessary and ultimately put me off wanting any more.
5/10
Asda – 65p
Upon opening the packet of Asda’s digestives, crumbs flew everywhere. The first biscuit crumbled in my hands and covered my table. Aside from the crumbs, the taste was pretty similar to the branded version. I found Asda’s biscuit sweeter than others. For some, this may be an issue, yet I don’t mind a sweeter biscuit.
6/10
McVitie’s – £1.88 from Asda
The staple brand is a much-loved favourite of mine and has still proved better than many supermarket options. I find there is something distinctive about McVitie’s Digestives that makes them a perfect addition to a cup of tea.
9/10
Aldi – 59p
To my surprise, budget supermarket Aldi managed to rival McVitie’s and take the top spot. Their biscuit had an ideal texture, while the salty-sweet taste was perfectly balanced. It didn’t crumble to pieces and wasn’t too tough either. Plus, the price tag can make this biscuit even more appealing.
