World Cup runner-up Dayot Upamecano is nearing the final six months of his Bayern Munich contract and is one of a number of candidates that Liverpool could look to sign next year

Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano has revealed he will make the ‘right decision’ on his future as he braces himself for plentiful interest. The French defender’s contract expires next summer, and giants of Europe are circling at the prospect of a free transfer.

Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool are all reportedly interested, with the latter entering a period of uncertainty. Ibrahima Konate’s Liverpool contract expires at the end of the season, with Los Blancos interested, while long-time target Marc Guehi is also set to enter free agency but has been linked to Bayern.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund central defender Nico Schlotterbeck is under contract until 2027 but does not look likely to pen new terms. That could pique the interest of the same group of teams and add a complicating factor.

For Upamecano’s part, he is focused on football and is leaving his future in the hands of his agent, Moussa Sissoko. The representative has ‘deep ties’ to PSG and also advocates for the likes of Ousmane Dembele.

Speaking to L’Equipe, Upamecano said: “My agent is taking care of it. We will make the right decision.

“I am receiving good advice. I am focused on this season and my goals with the club and the national team. I don’t have the headspace for it.

“I’m completely relaxed. I’m under contract with FC Bayern. I have goals. But I’m very grateful when clubs are interested in me.”

Liverpool were ready to sign top target Guehi in the summer transfer window, but the move collapsed on deadline day. Liverpool had a £35million offer accepted before Crystal Palace suddenly decided not to sell at the eleventh hour.

Guehi will be free to sign a pre-contract with a foreign club when the January transfer window opens, meaning Liverpool could lose out and have to cast their net further afield. Upamecano could yet be an option.

Bayern chief Max Eberl is not prepared to give up on extending Upamecano’s future in Germany without a fight, however. “It’s normal if other clubs are calling his agents, it’s part of the game,” Eberl said after facing PSG.

“I’ve already said that we want to do our best and get new contract done. We are on it.”
