National Car Parks (NCP) has confirmed 22 car parks will shut permanently on Friday after the business fell into administration earlier this month
A total of 22 NCP car parks are set to close within days after the firm entered administration.
Administrators said the sites were “no longer commercially viable to operate” and will permanently shut on Friday (March 27). NCP entered administration earlier this month after years of financial struggles.
The company, which employed 682 people and had 340 car parks across the country, including in major towns and city centres, airports and at hospitals.
Its financial performance has suffered in recent years in the wake of the Covid crisis as demand for parking has failed to recover to previous levels, particularly in city centre and commuter locations.
That and a shift in people’s working patterns has meant its car parking have been left with too many empty spaces. Yet many of its sites have long-term, inflexible leases which has meant the company has been unable to reduce costs or get shot of them, resulting in ongoing trading losses.
Administrators say NCP now has “insufficient cash available to meet its financial obligations”.
It has now been disclosed that 22 car parks will close from 11.59pm on Friday. However, the remaining 318 will continue to operate with no further closures planned.
Administrators at PwC said: Following an initial assessment of operations, the joint administrators have identified 22 sites that are commercially unviable and will therefore be closed to customers from 11:59pm on 27 March.
“Regrettably, due to the closure of these sites, 33 employees will be made redundant on 31 March. They will be supported through the statutory redundancy payments process.”
