Ariana Grande hit the Critics Choice red carpet yesterday in a full face of makeup from her R.E.M. beauty line, and it included a £16 lip stain that ‘stays put for hours’
Last night’s Critics Choice awards saw plenty of famous faces hitting the red carpet, including Wicked star Ariana Grande. The singer and actress opted for a full face of glam from her very own makeup line, R.E.M. beauty, which was shared on Instagram yesterday so you can get a full rundown of how to copy her ethereal, soft glam look.
Amongst the products was the Practically Permanent Lip Stain Marker which you can pick up for just £16 at Boots right now. Ariana was wearing the shade Booked n Busy, which is a soft mauve shade, but the lip stain also comes in three other colours, including pink, red and a berry tone.

The beauty of the Practically Permanent Lip Stain Marker is that it can be built up for a more intense colour if you prefer, or you can keep it simple and sheer with a subtle wash of colour. Unlike other stains which apply like a liquid lip, the R.E.M. stain has an unusual marker pen-style tip, which lets you brush the colour on more liberally whilst also doubling as a precise liner.
It gives your lips a more natural-looking finish, and has a comfortable formula which is said to stay in place and not transfer without feeling drying on your lips. As with all stains its best to prep and prime your lips first using a lip scrub and lip balm, to create a smooth, hydrated canvas before application.
Then you can apply the Practically Permanent Lip Stain Marker in a couple of different ways depending on what look you’re going for. You can apply it to the middle of your lips then use your finger to blend it out before it dries, giving a more “popsicle-stained” look, or use it as a solid base and liner before applying gloss over the top for a more classic look.
Another lip stain with a similar marker pen-style applicator is the KIKO Milano Long Lasting Colour Lip Marker which you can pick up for just £12 in eight different shades. Alternatively, Benefit’s Benetint has a more watery formula which soaks in quickly and is easy to build up – and LookFantastic just slashed it from £22.50 to £18.
However one of the most popular brands of lip stain is Wonderskin’s Wonder Blading All-Day Lip Stain which is £18 and has a huge £19 shades to choose from. You simply apply it like a liquid lip and leave it to set, before peeling it off to reveal a stain that stays put for hours.
However, Ariana’s Practically Permanent Lip Stain Marker has also been praised by shoppers, with one saying: “Absolutely love this .. stays put for hours no bleeding or smudging.”
Another wrote: “I’ve only had this for a few days but it’s sooo long lasting and pretty especially to contour your lips when used as a lip liner. Shade booked n busy is soo perfect.”
Some however found that the longevity wasn’t as good as others did, with one saying: “Not great if/when ur lips dry up , doesn’t last a miracle either but pretty good otherwise!”
Whilst another chimed in: “I have opened this around 2 weeks ago, it has already dried up and I’ve used it once. It has also turned a dark purple colour when it was red on first use. Waste of money.”
But others were a huge fan, with one writing: “I love this it gives the most natural looking pink lip super easy to use and looks so good I love it I got miss berry I want to try popular.”
And someone else adding: “My favourite! I will always repurchase; it’s the best lip stain.”
