JD Sports is an instantly recognisable sportswear and leisure company on the high street – but despite its fame, many people are only just realising what the initials actually stand for
JD Sports is a firm fixture on the high street, known and loved by countless shoppers. But despite its fame, many are actually unaware of the sentimental meaning behind its name.
The company was founded in 1981 as a single shop in Bury, Greater Manchester. It expanded in 1983, opening a store in the Arndale Centre in Manchester.
JD Sports evokes strong memories and nostalgia for lots of people. Whether it was showing off that iconic yellow drawstring bag at school or tracking down the newest trainers for a big night out, the sportswear and leisure giant offers something for everyone.
But many of its fans are only just cottoning on to what the “JD” in JD Sports actually stands for – and it’s leaving even the most regular shoppers in awe.
They flocked to X to share their astonishment at finally realising the story behind the name. One shopper penned: “Since when does JD in JD Sports stand for John David?”
Another agreed: “JD in JD Sports stands for John and David, idk [I don’t know] why that’s so funny to me.”
That’s right – the “JD” in JD Sports is a nod to the first names of its two founders, John and David.
John Wardle and David Makin established the brand back in 1981, opening the very first store selling sports goods in the North of England.
By 1989, JD Sports had already carved out a formidable reputation, with the duo launching their first London outlet. From there, the chain has gone from strength to strength, expanding its presence across the UK and beyond.
Since that first shop opened its doors more than 40 years ago, there are now hundreds of locations across the UK. As of May 3, 2025, it boasts 4,871 stores across 49 countries, though it has recently confirmed that 175 underperforming stores in the USA will be closing.
Ahead of the upcoming bank holiday, JD Sports has unveiled a dedicated section on its website to help shoppers snap up new releases suited to the occasion.
There’s a range of T-shirts, shorts and jackets for men, women and children from popular brands like Adidas, Nike, Fred Perry and more, as well as trainers and hats from the likes of New Balance, Merrell and others.
For women, there’s also crochet co-ords and bikinis for those thinking ahead to the summer months, alongside Crocs which don’t seem to be vanishing from the shelves anytime soon.
