A man and woman have been arrested after police were called to a property in Gateshead over concerns for the welfare of a baby who tragically later died in hospital.
Officers attended the home in Deckham on Thursday afternoon after concerns were raised by the ambulance service.
The baby was taken to hospital but died a short time later. Two people have been arrested and released on bail, reports Chronicle Live.
The man has been arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child, and the woman has been arrested on suspicion of neglect.
A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “Shortly after 1.45pm yesterday (Thursday), we received a report via the ambulance service of concern for the welfare of a baby in the Gateshead area. The baby was taken to hospital but tragically died a short time later.
“Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this time. We immediately launched an investigation, and two people have been arrested in connection with the report.
“A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child, and a woman has been arrested on suspicion of neglect. Both have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
“The investigation is very much at an early stage, and we would ask people to avoid speculation as officers take the necessary time to establish the circumstances.”
