Warm air is expected to linger well after sunset later this month, bringing overnight temperatures as high as 22C to parts of UK – with one region tipped to lead the heat
Brits could be in for a rare overnight heat surge later this month as weather maps show temperatures staying as high as 22C overnight.
The ECMWF weather model suggest parts of the country may barely cool after sunset, with areas in the West Midlands tipped to lead the heat overnight on Wednesday, May 27. Shropshire could still be sweltering at 22C as late as midnight, while much of southern Britain and the west holds onto unusually warm temperatures.
Areas around Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds, as well as parts of Cheshire, could remain at 21C into the early hours. Warm air is also expected to linger across southwest Wales, including Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, where temperatures may also stay around 21C.
Elsewhere, overnight readings of 20C are forecast across the majority of Northern Ireland, while areas around Greater Birmingham, including Wolverhampton, could still sit at 20C.
The southwest is also set for a tropical-style night, with Bristol, Bath and wider parts of Somerset holding near 20C. Even further north, parts of southwest Scotland could see 20C, including areas around Dumfries and Galloway.
London is meanwhile forecast to remain mild at around 18C, while eastern areas such as around Norwich, Cambridge and Northampton look cooler at roughly 15C. Parts of the Midlands, including around Leicester and Derby, may hover near 19C.
The overnight warmth follows an equally balmy evening on May 26, when temperatures could hit 23C across the Midlands and Shropshire. London may see 21C, while the South West and Wales could climb to 22C.
It comes after earlier weather maps hinted at a potential 29C bank holiday blast across southern and eastern England.
The Met Office’s long-range forecast from May 22 until May 31 says Brits can expect “very warm weather” during the Bank Holiday weekend, with temperatures “much warmer than the previous week”.
The forecaster says: “High pressure is expected to bring a good deal of fair, warm weather to the UK during the Bank Holiday weekend.
“It may be cloudier with a chance of some showers across Northern Ireland and Scotland, but even here it will be much warmer than the previous week and there will be plenty of dry weather around too.
“Through the following week, high pressure is expected to broadly remain in place for much of the UK, and fine weather is likely to continue for most of the country.
“There may be occasions where low pressure to the north may bring some brief spells of rain across northern parts, but in general fair weather will dominate. Temperatures are expected to be above normal, feeling very warm at times with light winds.”
