The first banks will close on Tuesday, May 5 with most of the others following before the end of June – full list of confirmed closures
Customers of some of Britain’s largest banks are set to lose their local branches within weeks as the financial giants restructure how they deliver their services. Both Santander and NatWest announced earlier this year they are shutting dozens of branches as consumers increasingly embrace online banking.
Lloyds has also announced the closure of Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland branches across the UK. There are a total of 159 confirmed closures between the five banks with the next wave starting this week.
The first banks will close on Tuesday, May 5 with most of the rest gone by the end of June. Santander, which has already closed dozens of branches, will shut 27 more with the first of these closing on Tuesday, May 5.
Announcing the decision in January, it said it was closing 44 branches over the coming months. The first four closed that month with the remainder of the planned closures taking place by the end of May.
It blamed the decision on the increase in customers who are using online services. The bank said then that that 96% of all customer transactions are now carried out digitally.
NatWest, meanwhile, is closing 15 of its branches nationwide by the end of May. It will shut a further 14 in June, then five more by the end of September. Three are also scheduled to close next year.
It announced the move in January when it said most of its branches would be replaced by banking hubs where customers would be able to access face-to-face services. In a statement on its website, it said: “Banking has changed dramatically in recent years. There’s more demand for mobile and online services, allowing you to benefit from a faster and easier way to bank.”
“We understand the closure of your local branch will bring some changes, and we want to make sure you are fully informed and supported every step of the way.” Further details were available via its closure guides on its website.
Lloyds Banking Group also announced dozens of closures across the UK earlier this year. These will affect customers of Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland.
At the time it announced a total of 168 Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland branches would close over the coming two years. The first of these have already gone earlier in 2026.
It said the closures were linked to a decline in branch visits as people used more digital banking. It has opened up its remaining branches to all Lloyds Banking Group customers allowing Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland customers to use any of their branches.
Below is a full list of all the remaining closures confirmed by the five banks and the dates they will shut.
