Drowning in debt can feel like there’s no way out, but there are plenty of ways to turn your finances around. One woman has proved that a fresh start is absolutely possible, and that you can do it ‘one pound at a time’.
The money-savvy Harriet revealed how she cleared a staggering £120,000 of debt by sticking to a straightforward £1 rule. This method allowed her to pay off her mortgage on a modest income, proving it’s within reach for anyone. Better still, Harriet is now dedicated to helping others who find themselves in the same boat.
Through her Instagram account @thefreedomfinancecoach, Harriet shared: “No one teaches you this when you’re broke, but I will. If you’re barely making it through the month and your debt seems like it’s swallowing you whole, then this is for you.”
She continued: “Here’s how to budget when your income is low – every pound matters.”
This is the foundation of her £1 rule, ensuring every penny spent serves a purpose. She said: “Use a zero based budget. Give every single pound a job. Even if you’ve only got £800 to £1,000 a month, you need to assign every pound a job.”
Harriet insists that “prioritising survival” must come first – covering the basics such as food, housing, and electricity. After that, slashing unnecessary spending is non-negotiable. She added: “That means no Netflix, no takeaways, no unnecessary subscriptions… You’re in survival mode now.”
Harriet has stressed that luxuries should only feature on your shopping list once you’ve cleared your debts, insisting that’s when treats are appropriate. She’s stopped buying clothes she aspires to fit into, along with excess phone data, spontaneous Amazon purchases, festive home decorations, and other non-essentials.
Harriet explained: “Once I ditched them, the savings stacked up fast. Being debt-free is not about being cheap, it’s about being intentional.”
The money-savvy woman highlighted the significance of monitoring your finances carefully, pointing out that knowing exactly what enters and leaves your account is vital for maintaining financial control. She observed: “Awareness is power because most people are bleeding money that they don’t even see.”
Harriet also advises building a small emergency fund – “even if it’s £100” – stressing that without this cushion, any unforeseen cost could throw your budget completely off track.
She continued: “Because without it any emergency or just a flat tire can wipe out your entire budget. And listen, it’s not easy but it’s possible because I did it.”
