The 78-year-old woman was hit while making her way back to her vehicle at an Asda car park and tragically died after sustaining serious injuries

A 78-year-old woman who was killed after a car struck her at an Asda car park has been named for the first time.

Emergency services were called to the store on Greenfield Lane in Shaw, Oldham, at 6.50pm following reports that a person had been hit by a car. The driver, a 35-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He was heading towards the exit of the car park and hit the pensioner while she was making her way back to her vehicle, Greater Manchester Police said.

The victim has now been named as Margaret Crichton, from Oldham. She sadly died after being left seriously injured in the collision, Manchester Evening News reports.

GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) is now working to identify Margaret’s family, who the force believe to be located in Manchester or Yorkshire.

Anyone who might have known her or her family are being asked to contact the SCIU on 0161 856 4741. Anyone who witnessed the incident, has any information on it or might have caught it on dashcam footage are also asked to come forward.

You can contact the SCIU directly on 0161 856 4741, or on their Live Chat service at gmp.police.uk, quoting log 2900 of 18/12/2025.

Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
