A woman in her 60s has died after getting into difficulty at Helen’s Bay beach on Saturday afternoon.
The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) was called at 1pm and a woman was taken to hospital where she sadly died. Police say her death is not being treated as suspicious. Several witnesses had rushed over to help before multiple emergency crews raced to the scene.
A Coastguard helicopter attended, along with Bangor and Portaferry Coastguard rescue teams and police. A rapid response paramedic, a Hart (Hazardous Area Response Team) crew, critical care paramedic and an ambulance officer also attended the scene.
Three people, including the woman, required hospital treatment. Two patients were taken to the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald, while a third person was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
NIAS has not released further details about the nature of the incident.
