William Hill is set to close around 200 shops in just weeks

A betting giant is set to close around 200 shops in just weeks.

William Hill confirmed that approximately 200 shops that are “no longer sustainable” will close from May. A virtual company-wide meeting was held at 9am on Tuesday, in which staff were told to gather at shops in preparation for the announcement, according to an email seen by the Daily Star.

William Hill has around 1,300 shops in the UK, meaning about 15 per cent of its stores will close for good.

A spokesperson for Evoke, William Hill’s parent company, said: “Following a thorough review and further to increased cost pressures on the regulated sector including significant tax increases announced by the Government in last year’s Autumn Budget, from May we are closing a number of shops that are no longer sustainable.

“We are offering our full support to our retail colleagues who are affected by these closures. These decisions are never taken lightly, however in the face of rising cost pressures we must take action to ensure we can continue to invest in our core retail estate, with the right shops, in the right locations.”

In response to the news, one punter said: “Maybe they’d have more punters in if they didn’t concentrate on getting as many people as possible on the gaming machines. That ruins the atmosphere for people who just like to have a bet.”
