A 63-year-old man has died in a high street attack after a “disturbance” at a Wetherspoons pub on a busy high street.
A suspect has now been arrested on suspicion of murder following the incident on Saturday night outside The Watch House pub in Lewisham, south-east London.
Police said they were called to reports of an assault on Lewisham High Street at 8.39pm and found a 63-year-old man who was seriously injured. The man who has not yet been named was taken to hospital where he later tragically died.
The force said that a 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently being held in custody. It is believed that the attack followed a “disturbance” at The Watch House pub.
“Met officers have made an arrest following the death of a man in Lewisham. We were called at 20:39hrs on Saturday, 1 March to reports of an assault in Lewisham High Street. Officers responded with paramedics and found a 63-year-old man with life-threatening injuries,” said a Met Police spokesperson.
“He was taken to hospital where he later died. His family have been informed. It’s believed the man was assaulted following a disturbance at The Watch House pub. A 42-year-old man was arrested nearby on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody at a south London police station.”
Detective Chief Inspector Craig Magee, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, has made an appeal to the public for information. He said: “This tragic incident happened in a busy part of south-east London. We would like to hear from anyone who was in Lewisham High Street or at The Watch House pub and has information about what happened.
“We have spent the night at the scene and there will be an increased police presence in the area today while we continue to gather evidence. I recognise the concern a crime of this nature causes.
