The property has a starting price of £40,000, but there’s a catch

A Victorian end-of-terrace property boasting riverside views has come onto the market for £40,000 – but there’s a significant catch.

The three-bedroom home in Worcester sits on the banks of the River Severn, just a short stroll from the city’s iconic cathedral. The house on Hylton Road was among scores of terraced properties constructed in the late 1800s and retains numerous original features, including bay windows and decorative fireplaces. The area later became highly desirable, drawing people in with its riverside scenery and close proximity to the city centre.

However, 193 Hylton Road has fallen into a state of disrepair, with every room requiring attention alongside the roof, which has partially caved in. The property, which has stood empty for more than 10 years, is now heading to auction with a guide price of £40,000.

With average house prices in the surrounding area exceeding £180,000, the home might appear to represent something of a bargain. But whoever secures it will almost certainly need to invest considerably to restore it to its former glory.

Internal photographs reveal every room to be in desperate need of renovation. Only a handful of remnants dotted throughout the interior offer glimpses into the terraced home’s former life.

These include peeling patterned wallpaper upstairs, a picture of a dog howling into the night, a distinctive red lampshade and two fireplaces. Cherry red rugs remain in place in the reception room.

The property comprises a first floor with three bedrooms and a ground floor featuring a reception room, kitchen and bathroom. The sale is being managed by Auction House London, with the property featuring a spacious garden and parking for two vehicles.

A spokesperson said: “The property is situated on a residential road close to local shops and amenities. The open spaces of Hylton Road Park are within easy reach. Transport links are provided by Worcester Foregate Street rail station.”
