A vet has shared his advice for keeping pets cool during the UK heatwave

Need to know: vet’s life-saving tips to keep pets cool in uk heatwave

  • A vet has revealed life-saving tips to keep pets cool as the UK swelters under extreme heat warnings with temperatures reaching up to 38°C.
  • Dr Alex Crow, an RCVS licensed veterinary surgeon, warns that flat-faced dogs like French Bulldogs, Bulldogs and Pugs are at higher risk as they “can’t regulate temperature as well” as other breeds.
  • His top tip involves freezing dog food with water added, explaining: “Adding water to dog food and freezing it is an effective way to keep pets cool. It’s a great enrichment for dogs who are bored inside.”
  • Dr Crow also advises pet owners to keep animals indoors during peak heat and use the ‘pavement test’ – if you can’t hold your hand on tarmac for seven seconds, it’s too hot for paws.
  • Warning signs of overheating include heavy panting, red or dark gums, and wobbliness, with the vet stressing: “Dogs can die in just five minutes if they’re left in a hot car.”
  • If pets do overheat, Dr Crow says to cool them down immediately by pouring cold water over them before rushing to a vet.
