New weather forecasts show snow falling in multiple parts of the UK over the next 24 hours, with flurries set to begin from midnight and lasting throughout most of the day

Britain could be blanketed with snow in just a few hours’ time, according to new forecasts.

Weather maps from WXCharts show a large cold front moving up the country from the southwest on Thursday – bringing wintry showers to a number of areas.Flurries could be seen across the country from midnight, and as much as 8cm could settle on the ground in Wales, where the snowfall is most intense.

Up to three inches is also possible in parts of the southwest of England, with other areas also set for flakes to fall. Exacta Weather’s James Madden said on Wednesday that “southwest England, Wales and Ireland” could see snow as temperatures begin to plunge, reports Birmingham Live.

“[In those regions] it will now be cold enough for some potential snow over a number of hours at least. Plus additional snow to Scotland and potentially to some certain parts of northern England.”

He added: “This is not as high-risk at this stage, but some parts of central England and other southern regions may also fall into the mix for some temporary sleet and snow within this period.”

The Met Office is meanwhile forecasting hill rain and snow to clear northwards throughout Thursday, leaving “bright spells and heavy and blustery showers for many”. Hail and thunderstorms are also possible in the south, accompanied by high winds.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Neil Armstrong said: “A deep area of low pressure will see increasing wind speeds along the south coast of England on Thursday. Gusts of 50mph are likely quite widely, with 60-70mph possible in exposed coastal areas. These winds will be accompanied by some heavy showers at times, with the possibility of hail and thunder in some locations, which will worsen travel conditions.”

Looking ahead to the long Easter weekend, Met Office is tipping the bank holiday to be dominated by windy and rainy weather. Easter Sunday is likely to be the day with the best chance of clear spells, though unsettled conditions are likely later in the day and into Monday.

Areas included in snow forecast for Thursday March 28:
