Brits will be able to bask in the highs of 20C this coming weekend as a mini-heatwave hits the south of the country, with temperatures expected to surge even further in June
The UK is set for a “mini heatwave” this weekend, with forecasters predicting temperatures to exceed 20C.
Forecasters at WXCharts predict Brits will be able to bask in the highs of 20C on Sunday May 12, with the south of the country seeing the best of the warm weather.
Those in London, Birmingham and Cardiff can expect to swap their umbrellas for sun hats this weekend, as much warmer weather is to be expected. Meanwhile in the north, the weather will remain cool with temperatures likely to hover between 10C and 15C. It follows predictions from forecasters that it will be a particularly hot day on June 11, especially for those in Bristol, West Sussex and Hampshire.
While the country is set to heat up, the period will not officially be considered a heatwave. This is because the Met Office measures a heatwave as a period of at least three consecutive days, with daily maximum temperatures either meeting or exceeding 25C. The national forecaster predicted “fine and dry” weather for the majority of Britain for the same period.
Looking ahead, its forecast for the period between Friday, May 10 and Sunday, May 19, reads: “There is a strong signal for high pressure across the UK at the start of this period, bringing a good deal of fine and dry weather for most areas, though with patchy mist and fog in places each morning.
“Northwestern parts of the UK are likely to be the exception to this, with more in the way of cloud and rain at times here. The high is likely to maintain its influence into the weekend before starting to weaken during the following week. A continuation of largely fine weather seems likely for most through the first few days, before a return of less settled conditions during the week. Temperatures are expected to be slightly above normal for early May, with some very warm days possible.”
This week, the Met Office said the UK will see cloudy and showery weather. The forecast read: “Showers fewer in number and less heavy on Tuesday. Staying mostly fine and warm through the middle of the week, though some rain far northwest at times.”
