Weather forecasters say temperatures across the UK are dropping — to a 5C low this week — a stark change from the sweltering heatwave many of us have enjoyed recently…
These striking weather maps show an unseasonal chill looms — abruptly ending the last of the heatwave.
The mercury hit 31.3C in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, and 30.8 in Usk, Monmouthshire, on Friday. It was another sunny and dry day everywhere, extending Britain’s glorious heatwave.
But forecasters understand the pattern is changing quickly and, as soon as tomorrow (Sunday), Brits could shiver in a 5C chill. It is due to a northern wind, sending colder air from the north and moving the last of the high pressure south and across mainland Europe. The latest heatwave had happened because warmer air — described as a “Sahara plume” — had moved from Africa and mainland Europe across the UK.
The new maps, from WXCHARTS which utilises MetDesk data, shows the falling temperatures. The green hues represents the lower pressure, and so meteorologists believe Scotland and the Northeast of England will see the quickest change. The Met Office also notes the change, reports Express.co.uk
The picture is a huge contrast to the climes across Europe at the moment. Holidaymakers in parts of Spain and Italy, in particular, will see the mercury jump to 44C by Thursday.
But here, the best of the sunshine — and heat — will be across the Southwest of England at the start of the week. Even then, it is unlikely to get hotter than 16C, which is nearly half of Friday’s UK peak of 31.3C in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire in the Midlands.
Separately, the Met Office has warned of showers in the north of the country. It says on its website: “Patchy rain possible in the north where cloud thickens.”
According to the MetDesk data, there are 35 counties set to experience temperatures colder than 10C in the coming days from Sunday. These include Greater Manchester and Lancashire.
