Hundreds of schools across the UK will be closed tomorrow as heavy snow sweeps in overnight.
Dozens of schools across the Midlands and Wales have announced closures for Friday, including more than two dozen in Shropshire. In Scotland, over 250 schools will remain closed tomorrow, down from around 440 on Wednesday, according to BBC figures. In England and Wales, parents can check individual school closures on the government website by entering their postcode.
Storm Goretti is sweeping across the UK, with its force already felt on Thursday evening when gusts of 99mph were recorded on the Isles of Scilly amid a rare red weather warning.

An amber “danger to life” warning for snow is in force from 8pm today until 9am tomorrow, covering the East Midlands, South West England, West Midlands, Yorkshire & Humber and Wales. A yellow snow warning, in place until midday tomorrow, affects these same regions as well as areas of northern and southern England, including London.
A separate yellow warning for snow and ice, also in force until midday tomorrow, covers northern and eastern Scotland along with northern England. In Scotland, over 150 schools in Aberdeenshire, dozens in the Highlands and Aberdeen, and a couple in Moray will be closed.
In its amber alert, the Met Office said rain associated with Storm Goretti will turn to “heavy snow”, which could cause power cuts and leave some rural communities cut off. Snowfall of 10 to 15cm is expected across the affected areas, with up to 30cm on higher ground in Wales and the Peak District.

Met Office Chief Forecaster Neil Armstrong said: “Heavy snow will affect Wales, the Midlands and parts of northern England overnight and through Friday morning. This multi-hazard event will bring significant disruption to many.
“Goretti will bring snow on its northern edge, this most likely over Wales and the Midlands. Here accumulations of 10-15 cm are likely widely, with 20-30 cm possible in some places, especially higher ground in Wales and the Peak District.
“An Amber warning has been issued where the greatest risk of disruption is likely on Thursday night into Friday morning. This is a complex spell of severe weather and I’d advise people in the warning areas to keep up to date with the forecast and messages from local authorities.”
