A high street pharmacy chain has saved 60 branches of a rival firm from going bust.
Allied Pharmacies has taken over the management of 60 Jhoots Pharmacies sites. The majority of locations are temporarily closed, but Allied has issued a statement saying it is “fully committed to reinstating essential pharmacy services” at these branches.
The takeover means Allied will now have around 210 branches across England and Wales, according to C+D.
Allied said: “We recognise the fundamental role that community pharmacies play in supporting public health and wellbeing and understand the disruption caused by these closures, particularly for vulnerable groups who depend on local access to vital healthcare services.
“Our immediate priority is to resume pharmaceutical services as soon as possible for these sites.”
MPs were told last month how Jhoots had appeared to be closing some of its pharmacies, amid warnings of how this could leave communities without access to health services. Staff had also claimed they had fallen behind on bills after not being paid properly.
The ownership of the pharmacies is split between brothers Manjit and Sarbjit Jhooty. It was reported earlier this year that there were around 150 Jhoots Pharmacies in the UK.
Manjit Jhooty owns more than 20 Jhoots branches through his companies Pasab and Jhoots Healthcare and denied any issues with the sites he manages. Sarbjit Jhooty was reported to own the remaining 129.
A spokesman for Manjit Jhooty previously told the BBC: “The pharmacies that my businesses operate are all fully solvent, functional and continue to provide important services and professional support to their local communities and that is not going to change.”
Sarbjit Jhooty previously told the BBC he is aware of “workforce and recruitment challenges” and said he was addressing the issues. The Mirror has contacted Jhoots for comment.
