Need to know

The DVSA announced new driving test booking restrictions from March 31, 2026

Need to know: New rules limit learner drivers to just two test booking changes

  • The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has announced major changes to driving test bookings that will affect learner drivers across England, Scotland, and Wales from March 31, 2026.
  • From this date, learners will be restricted to making just two changes to their car driving test appointment after booking. The DVSA stated: “From March 31 2026, you will only be allowed to make 2 changes to your car driving test appointment after you’ve booked it.”
  • In a post on X (previously known as Twitter), the agency said: “This change is part of the outcome of our consultation to improve the way driving tests are booked and help stop learners being exploited.”
  • For those who have already used up their permitted changes under current rules, a further two alterations will become available from March 31, 2026. Additional restrictions will follow later in spring 2026.
  • From spring 2026, learners will only be able to move their test to centres near where they originally booked. Those needing more than two changes must cancel and rebook their test.
  • The DVSA confirms that “you will get a full refund if you do it at least 10 full working days’ before the test date.”
