Two craft products have been recalled due to sand in the kits potentially being contaminated with asbestos, with customers urged to stop using them immediately
Two children’s craft items have been pulled from shelves by the manufacturer, following action taken by craft retailer Hobbycraft. The product withdrawal has been announced because the sand contained within the kits may be tainted with trace amounts of asbestos.
Colour Forge sand kits are designed to create textured ground effects on miniature bases, dioramas and wargaming landscapes, according to consumer watchdog Which?. These items present a health hazard to users, who are being urged to cease using them straight away.
They must also be stored away from children. Asbestos is a prohibited material as it presents a danger to wellbeing even when exposure levels are minimal, reports the Express.
The items affected by the withdrawal include:
- The Colour Forge Basing Sand – Moss Green
- The Colour Forge Basing Sand – Atlantiko Blue
Products stocked by Hobbycraft carry the product code 6873931000.
Hobbycraft has also provided disposal guidance for the item. Should shoppers have bought the Colour Forge Basing Sand, they ought to:
- Stop using the product immediately.
- If the sand is still in its packaging, place in a heavy-duty plastic bag, double tape it securely, label it clearly and store in a secure location out of the reach of children.
- If the sand has been used, clean up sites where the product was used using wet cloths to avoid generating dust. Wear gloves and a mask. Double bag the sand, gloves, mask and cloths.
- Keep children and other people away from areas where the sand has been used until the area has been cleaned.
- Return the sand vials from the product to your nearest Hobbycraft store for a full refund.
If you cannot reach a Hobbycraft branch, please follow the instructions above and bin the sand with your ordinary household rubbish. Contact Hobbycraft for a complete refund.
