Emergency services, including Staffordshire Police, dashed to the scene at Swinfen, near Lichfield, following the collision involving a blue Vauxhall Mokka

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses after a seven-year-old boy died in a crash on a main road in Staffordshire.

Officers were called to the scene on the A38 at Swinfen, near Lichfield, at about 5am on Saturday, where there had been a collision between a car and the child.

Staffordshire Police said on Sunday the child, who died at the scene, was a local boy, and the car was a blue Vauxhall Mokka. Specialist officers are supporting the boy’s family, the force said, as investigations continue.

Sergeant Chris Sweetmore, of Staffordshire Constabulary, said: “The collision occurred on the northbound carriageway, but we are keen to hear from witnesses who saw anyone on either side of the A38 at Swinfen around 5am.”

The police officer continued: “This incident is devastating for everyone involved and we continue to investigate the circumstances. Speculation as to what may have occurred is not helpful for the family or the wider investigation and I would ask that people refrain from putting comments on social media as to their thoughts and opinions.”

Anyone with relevant dashcam or information is asked to call 101 quoting incident 109 of March 7, or email ciustaffordshire.police.uk.

Swinfen is just south of Lichfield and is off the A38 which connects the cathedral city to Birmingham in the south and Derby in the northeast. It is a major commuter route into Birmingham and Lichfield.

The crash there comes after two people died following a fatal collision on the A3 – another commuter route – in Hindhead, Surrey on Tuesday, 3 March.

A man in his 20s, the driver of one of the vehicles, died at the scene. His family has been made aware. Five people were taken to hospital by paramedics. This included a woman in her thirties, the driver of one of the vehicles, who sustained life-threatening injuries.

She since died in hospital. Four men in their twenties were also taken to hospital with serious injuries. Specialist officers are supporting the family of the woman following her death.

The collision occurred shortly before 6.30pm on the A3, north of the Hindhead Tunnel, and involved two vehicles, a black Ford Fiesta and a grey Ford Fiesta.

The black Fiesta was travelling northbound when, after exiting the tunnel, it crossed the central reservation onto the southbound carriageway and collided with the grey Fiesta.
