A poll of 2,000 adults found we laugh at something inappropriate or insensitive on average four times a month
We may try to stifle a giggle, but it seems we can’t help but laugh at life’s awkward moments. According to a survey of 2,000 adults, we find humour in someone else’s misfortune around four times a month, with a person falling off a chair being the most likely to leave us in stitches.
Other moments that make us laugh include witnessing someone chasing after money or papers blowing in the wind, or watching a child’s reaction to trying sour or spicy food for the first time. Four in ten admit they find it funnier when these ‘mishaps’ happen to someone they know rather than a stranger.
However, when the tables are turned and we become the ones in an embarrassing situation, 37% of us admit to feeling mortified. In fact, the embarrassment can linger for hours, with one in ten Brits taking days to get over it.
The study, commissioned by Doritos Flamin’ Hot, found that despite knowing we shouldn’t find these moments amusing, half of us can’t help but laugh. Rob Pothier, spokesperson for the brand, said: “There’s a universal, somewhat mischievous thrill in witnessing others experience misfortune or discomfort. Whether it’s someone tripping or eating spicy foods – we often can’t help but laugh.
“We know that as a nation, Brits love spicy food and these challenges shouldn’t be taken too seriously. It is these moments that bring us closer together as we look back and laugh at them.”
The study showed that watching someone struggle with overly spicy food tickles the funny bone of 43%, and despite the discomfort it causes, 26% still relish eating fiery dishes.
To celebrate the nation’s love of spicy food and playful teasing, Doritos is launching two limited-edition “Flamin’ Hot or Not?” packs of Doritos and Walkers MAX, where one in every four crisps packs a fiery punch.
A third of those surveyed would be game for a ‘hot and spicy’ challenge if there was cash up for grabs, with 40% of Brits confident in their ability to withstand the spice.
Other ‘painful’ challenges participants are willing to try include enduring long walks and scaling mountains. Aside from the monetary incentive, the main reasons for joining such challenges were the enjoyment of the activity (48%), finding it amusing (39%), and seeking an adrenaline rush (38%).
The spokesperson for Doritos Flamin’ Hot added: “The adrenaline rush of tasting the crisp and finding out you haven’t got the spicy one is incredible.
“Topped off by the likelihood that someone else will get it, makes it even sweeter!”
