Here, we’ve compiled all the movies on Sky Cinema that have won or been nominated for an Oscar.

Forrest Gump

In Robert Zemeckis’ classic, Tom Hanks stars as the titular Alabama man who recalls experiences from running across the United States to fighting in the Vietnam War. Inspired by the 1986 novel of the same name, this is the film that coined iconic phrases like “Run, Forrest. Run!” and “Life was like a box of chocolates.”

It was the second-highest-grossing movie of 1994 and cleaned up during awards season, bagging Golden Globe and BAFTA nods and wins as well as taking home six Oscars including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director.

Gladiator

Ridley Scott’s Gladiator was a box office success when it hit screens in 2000, garnering a legion of fans and critical acclaim. From its epic action sequences to the brilliant performances, the film has cemented itself as a classic and a sequel is on the way with Paul Mescal.

Gladiator received 12 Oscar nominations – the most at that year’s Oscars – and won five, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe.

Inception

Christopher Nolan’s star-studded sci-fi hit sees Leonard DiCaprio pull off a daring heist deep within a mark’s dreams. Praised by critics and fans alike, this is perfect for those who are after an intellectual watch.

Nominated for eight Oscars, Inception secured four wins including Best Cinematography but lost out to The King’s Speech for Best Picture, with Nolan having to wait until Oppenheimer to bag his first Oscar.

The King’s Speech

This historical drama was a roaring success with Colin Firth praised for his performance as King George VI, earning him his first Oscar win for Best Actor. The film tells the story of the monarch’s unexpected ascension to the throne and his journey to overcome his stammer.

The King’s Speech received 12 Oscar nominations – the most of any film that year – and won four including Best Picture and Best Director for Tom Hooper.

Dallas Buyers Club

Another biographical drama, this one tells the story of Ron Woodroof, an electrician in mid-1980s Texas who is shocked to be diagnosed with AIDS and told he has just 30 days to live. Refusing to give in, he smuggles unapproved drugs into the state to treat his symptoms and distribute AIDS patients by establishing the “Dallas Buyers Club”.

Matthew McConaughey’s performance as Woodroof was praised by critics and audiences alike, with some calling it a career-best, with this sentiment reflected at the Oscars. The film earned six nominations, winning three including Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for Jared Leto.

Promising Young Woman

Before shocking the world with Saltburn, writer-director Emerald Fennell’s feature debut earned her an Oscar win for Best Original Screenplay. This Sky Original thriller stars Carey Mulligan as a troubled young woman haunted by a tragic event in her past as she seeks out revenge against those who have crossed her.

The film was nominated in five Oscar categories, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress.

E.T.

Steven Spielberg’s family favourite is the movie that made Drew Barrymore a household name aged just seven. It tells the story of Elliott (Henry Thomas), a boy who becomes friends with an extra-terrestrial called E.T. who has been left behind by his family here on Earth.

With the help of his family and friends, Elliott sets out to help E.T. find his way back home. The film received nine Oscar nods and won four, including Best Original Score for John Williams, but lost out in the Best Picture category to Ghandi.

Erin Brockovich

This iconic movie is a dramatization of the true story of Erin Brockovich, a young woman who initiated a legal case against the Pacific Gas and Electric Company over its role in the Hinkley groundwater contamination. Julia Roberts shines in the titular role and earned herself the Oscar for Best Actress – the only Oscar the movie won out of five nominations.

The Danish Girl

Based on the novel of the same name, this film is inspired by the lives of Danish painters Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. Eddie Redmayne stars as Elbe – one of the first individuals to undergo gender-affirming surgery – and Alicia Vikander as Wegener.

Both actors’ performances were praised, with the pair receiving Oscar nominations for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress respectively – with Vikander winning in her category.

Shrek

This beloved animation brought iconic characters like Shrek and Donkey to life on the big screen. It follows the green ogre Shrek (Mike Myers) as he finds his home has been taken over by fairy tale creatures who have been banished by the diminutive Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow).

With the help of Donkey (Eddie Murphy), the titular hero makes a deal with Farquaad to regain his swamp if he rescues a damsel in distress Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz). Shrek spawned three sequels and two feature-length spin-offs – while rumours continually swirl around a fifth instalment – with the first film receiving two Oscar nominations and securing the win for Best Animated Feature.
