The supermarket giant said it was expecting high demand over the weekend
Tesco has announced a major change to its delivery fees ahead of what it anticipates will be one of the busiest weekends of the year for the supermarket giant. Thanks to the warm weather and World Cup football, including England versus Norway on Saturday night, the UK’s biggest supermarket has announced that there will be no delivery fees on Tesco Whoosh orders over £25.
The offer will run ‘for the next few World Cup matchdays’ regardless of the England result, a spokesperson said. Tesco Whoosh is an on-demand grocery delivery service that brings items from local Tesco stores to your door in as little as 20 to 30 minutes.
“Excitement is building across the country with customers enjoying the summer weather, hosting gatherings, and getting involved in the build up to England’s crucial match,” the spokesperson continued. “This is expected to be one of our busiest weekends this year for sales of barbecue food and drinks, and we have some great deals available for people stocking up on all their match-day essentials.
“Last Sunday also saw one of the busiest ever days for Tesco Whoosh deliveries as customers chose rapid grocery deliveries to help them enjoy the England game and get what they need from as little as 20 minutes. We expect to see high demand again as we’re removing delivery charges tomorrow and for future game dates.”
Ahead of England’s game on Saturday, Tesco is expecting to sell:
- Over 4 million packs of crisps and nuts, around 2.7 million lagers, over 1 million packs of barbecue meat, nearly 1.5 million packs of coleslaw and dip, and 800,000 packs of ice cubes.
- Tesco is supporting football fans with free Whoosh delivery on selected dates across the rest of July. Starting tomorrow (Saturday, July 11), shoppers can enjoy Whoosh without paying delivery charges.
- Free Whoosh delivery will also be available on the following dates, regardless of England’s results:
- All day on Saturday, July 11
- All day on Wednesday, July 15 and Sunday, July 19, regardless of whether England are playing.
- And then all week from Monday, July 20 to Sunday, July 26.
- Customers using the service during the promotional period will automatically receive free delivery when their basket reaches £25
Kick-off for the England-Norway game is 10pm in the UK, with that translating to a 5pm start local time in Kansas City. Coming between England and a place in the semi-finals is a man that they know very well.
Erling Haaland has spearheaded Norway’s historic run to the quarter-finals, scoring seven goals in four games. Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard has been another key player for Norway, whose ability to hurt teams on the break has seen them get further than they have before at a World Cup.
