Your tap water could be unappealing to your dog, with one vet explaining why
Dog owners have been warned about a vital habit, with one expert raising some interesting points over how some people are using their tap water.
Dogs tend to drink less during the colder months, and as a result, owners are being urged to take proactive measures to ensure their four-legged friends remain properly hydrated such as using lukewarm water when using the tap rather than going straight for cold. The reason they don’t drink as much is because, as temperatures drop, pets lose less fluid and, much like us, don’t feel as thirsty as they do during summer.
Forthglade brand ambassador and Media Vet, Doctor James Greenwood, explained: “Throughout the colder months, it’s completely normal for dogs to drink less water. As temperatures drop, their bodies conserve moisture more efficiently.
“They pant less and don’t sweat as much, which means they lose far less fluid than in summer. Additionally, the sensation of thirst tends to feel less urgent in cooler weather, so they simply don’t feel the same need to drink.
“While this seasonal change is to be expected, dry air can affect your dog’s hydration, and water is important to support regulating their body temperature and keep their digestive system ticking along nicely”, reports the Daily Record.
Four easy ways to encourage your dog to drink more water
Offer room-temperature water
As mentioned, while a cold glass of tap water may be refreshing for us, dogs may not find it as appealing, especially during the colder weather. To help keep your dog hydrated, offer lukewarm or room temperature water, rather than straight from the cold tap – this will make it more inviting for them to drink.
Swap to wet dog food
Wet dog food contains considerably more water than dry kibble, making it an excellent choice during winter when your dog may not feel especially thirsty. With a moisture content of 60 to 80% compared to just three to 12% in dry food, changing to wet food can naturally help maintain your dog’s hydration without depending entirely on drinking water.
Provide more water bowls
A straightforward yet effective way to encourage your dog to drink more water is to place extra bowls throughout the home. For many dogs, water can be out of sight and out of mind.
If they’re comfortable in a favourite spot, they may not be inclined to wander to another room for a drink, particularly when they aren’t feeling especially thirsty. Multiple water bowls in various locations can make it easier and more attractive for them to drink.
Use play to make drinking water seem more fun
If encouraging your dog to drink water remains a struggle, it may be worth investing in a pet water fountain, as the flowing water can spark their curiosity. Alternative options include interactive water toys and lick mats, which offer both hydration and mental stimulation by triggering the release of endorphins.
That said, if your dog persistently shows a marked reluctance to drink despite your best efforts, vets strongly advise booking an appointment to rule out any underlying health concerns and get to the bottom of the issue.
