Many areas across the UK have been issued with flood warnings where Storm Bram’s heavy rainfall has a chance of causing a ‘danger to life’ and preparations are needed
A spell of severe weather is set to hit the UK with warnings for flooding as rain and wind will batter most of the nation. According to the Met Office, Storm Bram is expected to cause flooding and travel disruption in places Tuesday early hours and morning.
With up to 100mm of rainfall anticipated in some areas, there are high alerts for flooding dispersed across several counties. Alongside the substantial downpours parts of the UK will also be slammed with 85mph winds.
The Met Office warn that with deep floodwater comes a ‘danger to life’ and people should prepare for all eventualities. As well as homes and businesses likely to flood, roads will be severely impacted by the weather creating difficult driving conditions.
Public transport will also face disruption will train and bus services expected to be cancelled or face major delays. In certain areas communities face the chance of also being cut off by flooded roads and may experience power cuts.
The areas with flood warnings:
- Bristol Avon (upper) from Chippenham to Melksham
- Keswick Campsite
- North Bank Road alongside the River Nene, east of Peterborough and west of Dog-in-a-Doublet Sluice
- Plymouth Sound, Wembury Bay and tidal estuaries
- River Derwent at Buttercrambe Mill
- River Derwent at Stamford Bridge – The Weir Caravan Park and Kexby Bridge
- River Lynher from Berriowbridge to Notter Bridge
- River Ouse at York – riverside properties
- River Plym from Shaugh Bridge to Riverside Caravan Park
- River Severn at Severn Ham, Tewkesbury
- River Yealm at Yealmbridge and Yealmpton
- South Cornwall coast at Mounts Bay, seafront properties
- South Cornwall coast from Gribbin Head to Rame Head
- South Cornwall coast from Lands End to Lizard Point excluding Mounts Bay
- South Cornwall coast from Lizard Point to Gribbin Head excluding the Tidal Fal Estuary
- South Devon coast at the Kingsbridge and Avon estuaries
- South Hayling and South Eastoke seafront
- Tidal Fal Estuary
- West Bay East Beach
- Tidal area at Dale
- River Ritec at Tenby
Alongside these flood warnings there are also numerous flood alerts in place across the UK where flooding is possible. In all of these areas the Met Office suggest to prepare to avoid travelling by road during potentially dangerous road conditions.
A spokesperson said: “If you must travel, ensure you watch for possible danger and drive cautiously. It is not safe to drive, walk or swim through floodwater, avoid it where possible and if you are affected by fast flowing or deep-water call 999, and wait for help.
“Consider checking on vulnerable people that you know including older people, those with underlying conditions and those who live alone; they may need support with food and medical supplies.”
To stay best equipped for flooding, ensure you have a flood kit ready. This should include insurance and any other important documents; a torch & spare batteries; a first aid kit, prescription medicines and supplies for looking after your family members or pets.
