As the temperature drops outside, many Brits will be thinking about firing up their heating if they haven’t already. However, with energy bills soaring, the thought of turning up the thermostat can be daunting.

The Ofgem price cap, which is based on your typical household energy usage, increased at the start of the month. Staying warm at home is crucial, but if you’re hesitant about overusing the heating, there are alternatives.

One such solution is a £10.99 item from The Range that could help keep you snug without breaking the bank.

The budget-friendly retailer is currently selling a pair of thermal curtains that are said to keep the heat in and block out light. These fully lined, machine washable curtains come in six different colours, with prices starting at just £10.99.

These curtains are perfect for effectively insulating your home, warding off the cold and ensuring you stay warm. Made from a heavyweight fabric, these curtains are said to ‘transform’ your room with their ‘blackout qualities’ and ‘unique Supersoft drape material of soft sheen’, reports the Express.

As well as this, they are the same colour on both sides, with the blackout weave lining on the inside, making them ideal for any room where you want to keep warmth without over-relying on the heating.

Available in a range of sizes, the curtains are definitely worth snapping up if you’re after a new pair and want something that’ll boost your home’s energy efficiency this winter.

But it’s not only thermal curtains that can keep you snug without depending on central heating.

Electric blankets have been a popular choice for years, offering a far more budget-friendly method to ward off the chill.

Whether you prefer using yours whilst lounging on the sofa or bringing it to bed, there are so many different styles, colours and materials available.

However, a warning has been delivered to anyone owning an electric blanket, as they might end up creating a safety hazard if not used properly.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service recently took to TikTok to offer guidance on the proper way to use electric blankets and portable heaters for those using them to cut heating costs.

They stated: “Electric blankets and portable heaters are a great way to keep warm on a budget. However, they can become a fire risk if they’re not used correctly. Watch our advice video for some important information!”.

Throughout the clip, the fire safety expert cautioned: “Electric blankets are a very cost-effective way to keep warm this winter. However, it is important that we make sure that we use these correctly.

“Before use, make sure you check for any damaged cables as this may affect the use of the blanket. Make sure it is plugged into a wall socket and not an extension cable, and you must make sure that it is unplugged and turned off before you go to bed.”
