As the UK braces itself for another heatwave, one household expert has shared a simple hot water bottle tip for cooling down
While hot water bottles are typically associated with chilly weather or period pains, they can surprisingly be deployed to help you stay cool during sweltering conditions.
And with yet another heatwave descending upon the UK, households across the nation are probably searching for any methods to beat the heat in the days ahead.
Taking to Instagram, Dean Commodore, who shares household and DIY advice as @casadelacommodore, has revealed how you can repurpose a hot water bottle to help you achieve a cool and comfortable night’s sleep when temperatures soar.
He says: “Fill a hot water bottle 3/4 full, then pop it in the freezer.” After several hours, or whatever duration you choose, simply retrieve the hot water bottle and place it in your bed.
Dean’s followers were swift to respond to the post, with one cautioning: “And make sure you use a different hot water bottle for the winter – the freezer can erode the rubber and make it more liable to bursting when holding hot water, so best to dedicate a summer and winter one to avoid any nasty accidents!”
Meanwhile another enquired: “What if its just in fridge not freezer?”
To which Dean replied: “Sure of course you can I’m afraid that you would probably get 30 mins of cooling effect in this hot weather though.”
And a third Instagram user commented: “Such a great tip; we use freezer blocks, but I guess this might stay cold all night.”
Dean’s suggestion comes after the Met Office advised that keeping blinds and curtains drawn during hot weather can also assist in cooling your home down.
They said: “Closing curtains or blinds in rooms that face the sun can help prevent heat from building up indoors.”
Window coverings work as barriers against the sun’s rays, helping to stop your upstairs from becoming overly humid and stuffy.
If you don’t have suitable window dressings to hand, hanging up a bed sheet or towel ought to do the trick.
