Fighting limescale and soap scum in the bathroom is a never-ending battle, particularly on shower screens
Tackling the bathroom can often feel like a daunting undertaking, with countless surfaces requiring attention, from the sink and toilet to the shower, bath, and mirrors. Shower screens, in particular, can prove notoriously tricky to clean, with watermarks, soap scum, grime, and limescale becoming increasingly stubborn the longer they’re left to accumulate.
Keeping shower glass gleaming for any significant period is famously difficult, and most of us know this all too well. Shifting these unsightly marks from shower screens can be an exhausting and back-breaking task without the right tools or cleaning products.
For millions of households across the UK, battling limescale and dirt in the bathroom is a relentless struggle, especially on shower screens where water droplets leave cloudy, chalky deposits after every single use.
Indeed, streaky, grimy shower screens likely rank amongst Brits’ greatest bugbears when it comes to keeping the home clean.
Fortunately, there’s a simple yet highly effective technique to banish all that accumulated grime and limescale from shower screens, without the need for excessive scrubbing or costly specialist cleaning products.
A three-ingredient natural spray that’s simple to whip up at home could be the very solution to your shower screen woes.
Natural three-ingredient DIY shower screen spray
For those keen to steer clear of pricey, chemically-laden cleaning products packed with harsh ingredients, this natural homemade spray could be precisely what you’ve been searching for.
Ingredients and how to prepare
All you require is one cup of white vinegar, a cup of washing-up liquid, eight drops of any essential oil of your preference (peppermint and citrus are two excellent choices), and some warm water.
Simply mix all three ingredients together and then transfer the mixture into a spray bottle. Fill it with some warm water, but take care not to fill the bottle completely to the top, allowing room to blend the warm water with the other ingredients when you give your bottle a thorough shake.
How to use the natural cleaning spray
Liberally spray your dirty, limescale-covered shower screens with the natural cleaning spray and allow it to work its magic for anywhere between 15 to 30 minutes minimum. The longer you leave the solution on the shower glass, the more effectively the vinegar will dissolve streaky marks, limescale and soap scum.
Once the solution has been left to sit on the shower glass for sufficient time, gently wipe your shower screen with a damp cloth or natural scourer (using an abrasive scourer will cause scratches), and then rinse the glass down with warm water. By this stage, any sharp smell of the white vinegar should have faded, particularly thanks to the essential oil in your spray.
To give your shower screen an additional glossy finish, give the glass one final polish with a dry towel or cloth to leave it looking sparkling and spotless. With this natural DIY spray, you’ll have achieved brilliant results without resorting to harsh, unpleasant chemicals or wasting your energy on endless scrubbing.
For those seeking an alternative to white vinegar, Planet Friendly Living suggests: “The smell of vinegar fades very quickly when used in the shower spray, but if you find it unpleasant or if you don’t have any white vinegar in the house, citric acid makes a good alternative.
“Just like vinegar, citric acid works by dissolving limescale, removing hard water stains and lifting soap scum.”
Since citric acid isn’t quite as potent as vinegar, you might need to leave it on your shower glass for an extended period, or alternatively, apply the spray more regularly to ensure the limescale has fewer opportunities to accumulate on the shower screen.
