‘This looks like a political gamble – not strategic diplomacy’
Donald Trump’s hostility towards Britain is no longer in doubt. His repeated attacks, echoed by his ‘Secretary of War’ Pete Hegseth, have laid bare a White House willing to sneer at a key ally even as global tensions rise.
Which makes the Government’s decision to press ahead with a state visit all the more extraordinary. This is not the King’s call. It is ministers who are choosing to dispatch him to Washington, placing him in front of a president with a recent track record of public insults, erratic behaviour and open disdain for the UK.
Why take that risk? Why expose the monarch to the very real prospect of diplomatic embarrassment at the hands of a man who has shown the UK so little respect?
At a moment like this, diplomacy should be calm, strategic and grounded in reality. Instead, this looks like a political gamble, one that risks humiliating the King while diminishing Britain’s standing. It is a risk the country simply does not need to take.

‘Covid may not dominate daily life – bit it still demands respect’
The emergence of the Cicada Covid variant is a stark reminder that this virus has not gone away. With signs, it spreads faster and may hit children harder; vigilance matters more than ever.
Scientists are right to monitor closely, not panic. Vaccines remain our strongest defence, especially for the most vulnerable. But clear messaging is vital.
Families deserve honesty, not complacency at such times. We have learned hard lessons over the past few years – about preparedness, transparency and acting early.
Now is the moment to apply them. That means maintaining strong surveillance, ensuring healthcare is ready, and encouraging sensible precautions where needed.
Covid may no longer dominate daily life, but it still demands respect. Ignoring it would be a mistake we cannot afford to repeat.
