The advice could help homeowners looking to improve their home security
Homeowners who don’t have certain security devices at home have been urged to consider getting them, as experts say they are “worth having before you need them”. The advice was shared in a viral post by consumer group Which?.
According to the experts at Which?, there are various gadgets that households might not want to go without, including a video doorbell. Posting on TikTok and Instagram, the team highlighted “essential security products you need for your home”, which included emergency items such as carbon monoxide detectors and first aid kits.
The list also included recording equipment, such as security cameras. Issuing a warning for people who don’t have the gadgets at home, Which? UK said: “Some products are worth having before you need them.
“From smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to first aid kits and security cameras. The right home safety kit can help protect you in everyday risks and emergencies.”
In the footage, several Which? team members shared recommendations for the public. Sharing the first tip, one said: “I’d recommend connecting a video doorbell to your home Wi-Fi so you can see who’s at your door without needing to answer it and catch any doorstep thieves on camera.
“And building a security camera set-up at home.” She explained that it can a give you “an extra layer of protection, peace of mind and be a deterrent for burglars.”
Another employee shared: “I would always make sure I had a working CO alarm in my home. Low amounts of carbon monoxide can be dangerous, high concentrations can be deadly. At Which? we test how quickly CO alarms respond to CO from 50 ppm up to 300 ppm. The best are loud and sensitive at every concentration.”
There was more advice. A different team member said: “Make sure you know what your home insurance covers too. A combined home insurance policy will cover the cost of repairing damage to the structure of your property and contents within the home.
“But also check for add-ons like accidental damage, home emergency cover and cover for personal possessions that you carry with you when you’re out and about.”
For the final tip, a worker said households should get a reliable smoke alarm. They explained: “Having a reliable smoke alarm in your home is so important. A good smoke alarm should be loud enough to hear and it should be quick to react to any fire in your home.”
