A Sainsbury’s shopper has posted a photo of a new festive party food offering from the supermarket – and they’re aren’t alone in thinking it’s ‘weird’ and unusual
Foodies have had lots to say about a Sainsbury’s festive party food item.
The supermarket has launched its ‘Gingerbread Shaped People with Ketchup’, which is essentially chicken nuggets in the shape of gingerbread men with ketchup that can be used for decorating. A Reddit user posted a picture of the Sainsbury’s party food item, which can be purchased for £3.50, in the Casual UK Reddit group.
The user captioned the photo: “Are you OK Britain do you need to talk to someone.” The post has had nearly 3,000 upvotes and 263 comments.
One Reddit user said: “I’m both fascinated and horrified. I can’t stop picturing a massive plate of them now.” Another added: “I saw this the other day and the wording has really tickled me. It almost reads as if it’s human meat, in the shape of gingerbread (what even is a gingerbread shape?).”
The description on the box of the Gingerbread Shaped People with ketchup says “chicken seasoned, formed and shaped, coated in golden breadcrumbs with tomato ketchup for decorating”. You can see an image on the box of gingerbread men decorated with ketchup for eyes and buttons.
A third Reddit user commented: “I think they’ve called them gingerbread people because that’s a common, recognisable ‘festive’ treat but just made it really confusing because I assume these aren’t actually gingerbread flavour? And if they are, that’s probably weirder.”
A fourth claimed: “Just a tiny tweak of the shape and they could have just made them chicken nugget Christmas trees with ketchup baubles, and saved what was probably weeks of debate about how to get around using the word man to describe a gingerbread man.”
One Reddit user commented to say they had actually tried the Sainsbury’s party food item. They said: “We had these last night (with other things, not just a massive plate of solely them) and they were delicious.”
Further users noticed the use by date in the photo was December 23. Some people thought this meant the gingerbread shaped chicken nuggets wouldn’t be able to be served as party food on Christmas Day.
One person said: “Use by 23 December. Well, that’s my plans for Christmas in shambles.” Another added: “Perfect Christmas party food if you don’t mind them being out of date before Christmas.”
In response to the first comment about the use by date, a different Reddit user said that the Gingerbread Shaped People with ketchup is a fresh food item so it should be used by December 23 but you “can choose to freeze the ginger people if you want”.
You might have seen dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets or other animals but gingerbread men seem to be a new one for many people. If you’re looking for something new and festive to feed the kids, the Sainsbury’s Gingerbread Shaped People with ketchup could be an option.
