The Ryanair flight departed Birmingham on what was expected to be a routine journey across the Irish Sea to Dublin, but was forced to make an emergency landing
A Ryanair flight was forced to declare an emergency shortly after taking off from Birmingham after a passenger reportedly suffered a medical emergency on board.
Flight FR661, operated by a Boeing 737-800, departed Birmingham Airport at 08:37am on Sunday on what was expected to be a routine journey across the Irish Sea to Dublin.
But as the aircraft began its descent towards the Irish capital, the crew issued the emergency squawk code 7700 – the universal transponder code used by pilots to declare a general emergency.
According to flight tracking reports from AirLive, the aircraft was passing through around 8,000 feet over the Irish Sea when the emergency code was transmitted.
Air traffic controllers granted the flight priority landing clearance, with the aircraft touching down safely on Runway 28L at Dublin Airport around 40 minutes after departing Birmingham.
Emergency ground crews were on standby to meet the aircraft after it arrived at gate 109.
The emergency was reportedly declared following a medical incident involving a passenger.
