Need to know

Royal Mail has confirmed a major change to its 2nd class delivery service across the UK

Royal Mail 2nd class delivery changes – need to know.

  • Royal Mail has confirmed major changes to how it delivers 2nd class post. Its Saturday deliveries are being permanently scrapped.
  • The postal service is sending leaflets to millions of UK households warning that 2nd class letters and cards will now be delivered on alternate weekdays only. This means post will arrive on Monday, Wednesday, Friday one week, then Tuesday, Thursday the next.
  • Despite the changes, Royal Mail insists it will still aim to deliver items “within three weekdays”. However, weekend gaps mean a letter sent on Thursday may not arrive until the following Tuesday.
  • The changes follow Ofcom’s reforms to the Universal Service Obligation announced in July 2025. Royal Mail said: “Letters remain an important means of keeping us connected, but fewer are being sent these days.”
  • First class mail will continue to be delivered six days a week, Monday to Saturday. Parcels will still be delivered up to seven days a week, with 2nd class stamps remaining at 91p.
  • The new delivery schedule will be rolled out “across the UK in 2026” as Royal Mail adapts to declining letter volumes.
