Roy Keane did not hold back in his assessment of Manchester United’s draw against West ham as Diogo Dalot’s goal was cancelled out by Soungoutou Magassa’s effort

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane reckons the Red Devils were ‘frightened’ to earn victory against West Ham. Ruben Amorim’s side could only earn a draw at home despite opening the scoring, and Keane believes they are not ‘nasty’ enough.

United gave up a 1-0 lead at Old Trafford after Diogo Dalot opened the scoring in a lacklustre match. The Irons fought their way back into the game, and Noussair Mazraoui’s goal-line block from Jarrod Bowen’s header proved to be in vain as Soungoutou Magassa slotted in the rebound after 83 minutes.

United once again missed the chance to move up to the upper echelons of the table. Like in defeat to Everton, Amorim’s men dropped points when they could have moved into fifth position.

The players were booed upon the full-time whistle, with the crowd at the Theatre of Dreams seemingly as irked as club icon Keane. The Irishman could not contain his frustration at the end of the match, criticising the team’s lack of ambition to extend their advantage.

“After they get the goal, you are playing against a team in the bottom three, they take their foot off the gas. You’re 1-0 up! Take nothing away from West Ham, and they just about deserved the equaliser,” said Keane on Sky Sports.

“You are just putting yourself under pressure. Every time I watch this United team, they disappointing. They aren’t clinical, they weren’t nasty enough to get the job done.

“People will be scratching their heads. One minute they are making progress, win and you go fifth. There will be a lot of frustration.

“Show your quality. In their last three or four games, I think it has been desperate. Really poor. An opportunity to get the job done and they were almost frightened.

“We are talking about fifth here by the way. Same old problems.”

Keane was frustrated with the lack of intensity present in the squad to go and claim a win. “United are making substitutions, and he is entitled to do that, but I was watching people come off and it was like they had won the league!” he added.

“Show some intensity. It was all a bit, ‘this is cool’. You cannot be cool when you’re 1-0 up. Get the job done!

“United have better players than West Ham but this is not a good United team. It was too relaxed, get the job done!”

United settle into eighth in the Premier League, while West Ham fail to break out of the relegation zone after Leeds’ win. A crucial point in their battle, nevertheless.

Pundit Gary Neville was impressed by their goalscorer. “Magassa has been all action – all around the pitch,” he said. “Plenty of tackles. He’s been a destroyer out there and he’s gone and got a goal. He rescued West Ham a vital point.”
