An RAF airbase has been plunged into lockdown.
Security forces at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk quickly took action shortly before 8am today after a person allegedly attempted to get inside without “proper identification”.
A spokesman for the airbase, which is home to the 48th Fighter Wing, told EADT: “An individual attempted to enter RAF Lakenheath at Gate 2 without proper identification.
“The gate barriers were deployed and security forces personnel worked quickly to stop the vehicle from entering the installation.” The spokesman further confirmed a person was taken into custody by the Ministry of Defence police.
RAF Lakenheath serves as the largest US Air Force (USAF) operated base in the UK. It is the home of the 48th Fighter Wing, also known as the “Liberty Wing,” which operates F-15E Strike Eagles and F-35A Lightning II aircraft.
