The Royal National Lifeboat Institution has praised a “quick-thinking” teenager who used his own boat to rescue two men after they fell into the water from an inflatable boat off the Isle of Skye.
The teenager, believed to be around 16 years old, spotted the pair in difficulty in Broadford Bay on Saturday evening after they fell from a toy inflatable boat. He went out in his own boat to rescue them and brought them back to shore.
The Kyle of Lochalsh RNLI lifeboat was also dispatched after HM Coastguard received reports at about 9pm of two men in difficulty in the water. However, by the time the lifeboat arrived, the men had already been rescued and were reported to be safe and well.
Andrew MacDonald, helm at Kyle RNLI, said: “Thanks to the quick thinking of the teenager going out in his own boat to rescue the two casualties, a far more serious situation was averted.
“We’d like to remind people that blow-up inflatable toys should be kept for use in swimming pools and not open water, and to always ensure that you have lifejackets on and a means of communicating to the emergency services if you get into any difficulty.”
